Patiala salwar as it is clear from its name, has its roots in Northern Region of Punjab State in India. The king of Patiala used to wear his royal dress as Patiala Salwar. Over the decades the dress now is not worn by men but it has classically transformed itself with new cuts & styling into women’s Patiala Salwar.
Patiala Salwar is very loose & stitched with pleats .It is a very comfortable outfit to wear. Patiala Salwar requires double length of material to get stitched as compared to regular salwar .The fall of the Patiala Salwar is such that it gives a beautiful draping effect. A belt & attached drawstring is used at waistline to keep the salwar in place. It can be worn by different types of Kameez (shirt) .In modern trend; girls wear a short shirt or kurti with it. It is also referred to as Patiala Shahi Salwar. It can be stitched from any fabric that has rich texture. It includes cotton, crepe, georgette, brocade, and many more. To complete the look phulkari dupatta or a monochromatic hued dupatta adorned with sequins or lace trims, draped beautifully can be used.
